2018 Proposal: WASI

Who: Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc.

Pitcher: Leslie Need

Description of WASI: In 2016, WASI served 104,000 meals to Mat-Su seniors. And that’s not all – WASI does so much more. WASI has a senior housing campus with 128 units. WASI serves meals at its campus and meals on wheels. WASI offers in-home services so seniors can age in place in their home. WASI offers chore and household help to seniors.  WASI offers respite care and help to low-income seniors for medical, dental, equipment, and home modification costs. WASI offers fitness and wellness classes and has a lending library. We want seniors to be able to stay in Alaska in retirement. WASI helps seniors in the fastest growing region of our state stay in our state.

What can we do? WASI has been hit hard by the state recession: so deeply impacted they are having to cut meal services and consider implementing harsh criteria for meals on wheels. How can we help? The meals on wheels delivery vehicle is broken down! Cost estimate to fix: $5,724. If that’s a stretch, there are plenty of things WASI needs:

-Sponsor a meal for a day – $397 (Holiday $500)
-Replacement tools for our maintenance crew – $1,350
-Replacement for broken down outdoor swing at gazebo in common park – $230
-Replacement Treadmill for senior gym – $2,400
-Industrial warmer for kitchen – $1,900 (Includes shipping to Alaska)
-Replace 20 of the old chairs in senior gym (used for fitness classes)- $990
